Let’s Grow Vernon is a planning initiative to bring more business and industry to Leesville and Vernon Parish.
The core of the initiative is for Vernon Parish to become a Louisiana Development Ready Community.
State certification as a Louisiana Development Ready Community, or LDRC, would give the area a competitive edge and put it among those that the state markets in the global marketplace for new investment, jobs and population.
Municipalities that have completed the LDRC program are all more competitive because they have a written plan describing how they are going to leverage assets and address challenges. Additionally, the communities can show progress from year to year because of developed measurements identified in their plan, much like mile-markers on a road map.
Each community’s plan includes strategies to address education, workforce development, infrastructure, leadership, and marketing/communication, all of which are key elements to attracting business and industry.
Let’s Grow Vernon is driven by a steering committee of business leaders, elected officials and concerned citizens. Application to the LDRC program is currently being made by the steering committee; however, the steering committee has also pressed forward by completing assessments of the community and its competitiveness, key steps in the process of becoming LDRC certified.
The initiative officially kicked off in October 2012. Next steps will include completing surveys of citizens and business leaders; creating a 10-year vision for the community; identifying the community’s goals; and fine-tuning a 5-year Community and Economic Development Strategic Plan for infrastructure, education, workforce development, leadership and marketing/communications.
