Local Officials held a press conference on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013 to discuss the recent assessment by the Department of the Army concerning a possible troop reduction of approximately 5,300 soldiers and Army civilians at Fort Polk (Press Release). Not included in that figure are contractors, support personnel and dependents. Such a reduction of force at Fort Polk would have a tremendous negative impact on the economy of Vernon Parish, the region and the state of Louisiana, since Fort Polk is the largest employer in the state.
